Ceramics is Earth blended in Water tempered by Fire and Air that has been infused with the makers spirit. Ceramics is the art form which moved humans from daily existence to civilization by allowing the community to store food and water in a clean and safe way. This community spirit stays alive in ceramics studios because of the communal process of forming and firing the work. We will work together in our class to support each other in our work in this room.Students will learn to maintain our studio as a clean and healthy environment for all to share together.
In this class we will explore the media of clay and discover its amazing properties. Clay is solid rock when dry yet it can also be dust. Clay is plastic (able to bend and stretch) when wet yet can also be liquid. When melted in a fire at 2200 degrees Fahrenheit it becomes molten glass and changes from clay (particles) to a solid rock.
This class is high paced. We will complete three major projects each quarter. If you miss a day you must make it up by coming in either before school or in a free period. When we are done with forming a project it will go into a kiln and be fired. If you are behind your work will not get into a kiln and will likely not be finished in time for the turn in date. Late work may not be graded so it is in your best interest to keep up with the assignments. When finished we will look at the work and have it on display for a couple weeks, this is your chance to share your art with our larger Wilson community. After displaying the work it will go home with you. Your class fee covers the cost of the clay you will use in making your projects.

Course Syllabus 2015-16
Hello and Welcome back to Ceramics.
We are going to have a great year exploring the art of ceramics. I am looking forward this year to grow and learn with an amazing group of students. In this class we will develop our personal style and voice. Students will improve their techniques in working with clay and increase their ability to make the clay do what they want it to.
We will have three projects to present each Quarter. These projects may be a set of smaller objects or a single large object. A student working on a sculpture might only complete one large object in a three week session while someone on the potter's wheel may make a set of 4-10 mugs in the same time. Projects must be completed and glazed fired by the due date. Late work may not be accepted for a grade. Students are expected to have their work ready on the due day. If you have an excused absence the work is to be ready at the beginning of the next class when you get back.

Projects are scored in three parts.
- Students will be assigned a project. The work should show completion of the assigned elements. Failure to do so will result in lost points.
- Craftsmanship- you will be taught specific skills in the various projects and your project should show a mastery of the skill demonstrated.
- Aesthetics- does your work come to life, is it beautiful, have you worked the clay in a way that transforms it from an inert mass to something that feels alive.
